EVExchange: A Relay Attack on Electric Vehicle Charging System

Abstract To support the increasing spread of Electric Vehicles (EVs), Charging Stations (CSs) are being installed worldwide. The new generation CSs employs Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G) paradigm by implementing novel standards such as ISO 15118. This standard enables high-level communication between vehicle and charging column, helps manage charge smartly, simplifies payment phase. paradigm, which connects Smart Grid to external networks (e.g., EVs CSs), has not been thoroughly examined yet. Therefore, it may lead dangerous vulnerability surfaces research challenges. In this paper, we present EVExchange , first attack steal energy during a session in V2G communication: i.e., attacker’s car while letting victim pay for it. Furthermore, if reverse flow is enabled, attacker can even sell available on victim’s car! Thus, getting economic profit selling, leaving with completely discharged battery. We developed virtual physical testbed validate prove its effectiveness stealing energy. prevent attack, propose lightweight modification 15118 protocol include distance bounding algorithm.
